Years ago, when I was working in South San Francisco, there was a fire on Mt San Bruno. I watched a couple times as helicopters with those buckets flew in and dumped water.

Each time, from my vantage point, it looked like they missed by a mile, but each time it went right onto the fireline. I guess the pilot knew what he was doing.

Yeah Sure WhatEVs  Aug 11, 2020 • 7:13:30pm

This should be read. apple.news

The Trump campaign is using a combination of short-code texts (from 880-22) and peer-to-peer texts from various toll-free 10-digit numbers starting with 855. Most political campaigns use short-code blasts — which can be sent en masse from an autodialer to people who have opted in — for one-sided requests for donations. Peer-to-peer texts, which can be manually sent to anyone, are usually used to initiate back-and-forth conversations.

But the Trump campaign’s shortcode texts are indistinguishable from its peer-to-peer texts. Instead of using peer-to-peer technology to initiate a dialogue with voters, the campaign appears to be using it as a way to spam people who didn’t sign up for this.

That (the text messages) might seem like an obvious scam, and even some Trump supporters have fretted on Twitter that the texts harassing people for not giving enough money could alienate voters.

But people who tweet obsessively about politics are not the target audience for these texts — and based on the sheer number of messages the campaign continues to send, the messages appear to be working.

“It’s a master class in how to persuade people to take action,” Eric Wilson, a Republican digital strategist, said in an interview. “There’s a very clear call to action, there’s a sense of urgency.”

And at least some Democratic operatives are worried that the Trump texting operation is actually much savvier than it appears. “This may be an unpopular opinion, but they’re very good,” a person who has worked on peer-to-peer texting efforts for Democratic candidates said in an interview. “It’s so smart,” they said, referring to the texts promoting unwinnable perks. “People totally believe it.”

They’ll try, but it’s not going to work.

“They’re not going to stop,” she said of the protests. “This is a movement.”

“They’re not going to stop before Election Day in November, and they’re not going to stop after Election Day,” Harris continued. “Everyone should take note of that on both levels, that they’re not going to let up and they should not and we should not.”

Harris said that the protests must continue in order to make a difference and shared that she made a “conscious decision” to become a prosecutor because she doesn’t know one Black man that has never been racially profiled.

“The only way we’re going to truly achieve change is when there are people in the system who are willing or pushing to do it, and when there are those folks who are outside of the system demanding it,” she said.

“Some of the success that we’ve been able to achieve around criminal justice reform would not have happened in recent years were it not for Black Lives Matter,” Harris added. “These movements provide a counterforce to get us to where we need to be.”

Congrats to the democrat VP pick 🇺🇸 Climb upon Geraldine Ferraro’s and my shoulders, and from the most amazing view in your life consider lessons we learned:

1) out of the chute trust no one new;

2) fight mightily to keep your own team with you - they know you, know your voice, and most importantly are trustworthy;

3) don’t get muzzled - connect with media and voters in your own unique way. Some yahoos running campaigns will suffocate you with their own self-centered agenda so remember YOU were chosen for who YOU are.  So stay connected with America as you smile and ignore deceptive “handlers” trying to change you;

4) some fun terms you may learn:
“OTR” - an orchestrated campaign stop that’s meant to look un-orchestrated where you “normalize” in front of voters. (I’d remembered not packing my running shoes, they turned it into a whole campaign stop with media detailing my every move trying on shoes.) OTR’s get bizarre (try eating in front of vultures looking for the “gotcha” shot!) but my team made OTR’s the second most fun thing!

“Ropeline”: thee MOST fun thing! Every single handshake and holler and hug and smile melted my heart, energized my soul, and gave me the utmost hope in the greatest country on earth! The ropeline is often the only way to literally touch those whom you wish to serve, so be sincere in looking in their eyes, understanding why they’re there, never forgetting they represent the innumerable Americans putting their trust in you to serve for the right reasons. It’s who and what they represent that is all that matters!

5) don’t forget the women who came before you;

6) have fun! This IS the greatest country in the world and hopefully you’ll be blessed beyond belief, like I was, with meeting new people from all walks of life and see just how great it is!

🇺🇸 more to come… including one of the funniest things in my life, right before my debate with Sen. Joe Biden… stay tuned!

- Sarah Palin

Fire doubled in size today and jumped the Colorado River. The backroad to Glenwood Springs from my place is closed, only way for me to get there is to drive over Independence Pass and through Aspen.

I should amend this. This is the *shortest* route to Glenwood Springs for me. I could also drive to Steamboat Springs, over to Craig then down to Rifle, that’s 200 miles. A 120 or 200 mile detour to get to the next town over (25 miles). Oy.

Yup. Democratic Plantation talking point is racist AF. It requires two elements:

Evil scheming white people (sound familiar?) convincing black folk to vote against their own best interest. Because you either give them the dignity of knowing what’s in their own best interest or you deny them that because you assume they’re stupid. As if black folks choose to live on a plantation.

Even more ironic when they get folks like Candace Bigsby to sell it.

Yeah, that’s two words that you can expect to make a comeback in the next few weeks: “White guilt.” The idea that a white person never votes for a black candidate because they’re the better choice, but because they’ve either been “brainwashed” by years of liberal media to feel “guilty” over being white or they’re afraid of being accused by those who have of being “racist” for not supporting the black candidate.

Yep, second year running I believe. No doubt about it, he’s a bankable star. Even in some of the more preposterous films he’s in (think San Andreas), he’s good.

And there’s nothing wrong with being in a preposterous film - I think of Michael Caine’s quip regarding Jaws: The Revenge…”I have never seen it, but by all accounts it is terrible. However, I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific.”

His chances of winning a majority or even a plurality of the popular vote are next to zero, but this is the American electoral system, which Trump successfully gamed in 2016 and as incumbent, can game even more effectively this time around.

The reasoning is simply that there’s almost 100 days before the election, so it’s accounting for that amount of unknown unknowns in some way. Apparently, if the election were held today Biden would have a 93% chance of winning under this model.

There is still a certification process to become a sheriff’s deputy in Florida. It’s not quite so simple to simply fire them and replace them.

That said, if you need the pay because conservatives would rather force everyone to work than just sit out for three weeks because that will cost their donors money, it’s tough to walk off the job.

It could be a General Duty Clause violation if the regional OSHA shop could show an unreasonable risk to life and health. That would be easy in a crowded chicken plant, harder in a small office with low traffic.

In all cases, it wouldn’t stick because a Trump flunky heads the DoL.

I’m putting in a new HVAC system and we had option for filter systems. MERV 11, 13, 16, or 20. Those are industry standard types of filters, and 11 is the cheapest, 20 is the most expensive. We went with the 16, since it reduces like 95% of particles down to 0.3 microns. It wasn’t particularly expensive (but like printer cartridges, the cost is the filters over time). Most people don’t have filter systems that good, or replace their filters or clean their ducts (like ever).

Hospitals can have even higher quality with UV scrubbers.

Nojay UK  Aug 12, 2020 • 7:20:49am

re: #239 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

In England and Wales a police officer may only have a school qualification at the moment but from 2020 new applicants need to either hold a three-year college degree or be working towards such as a so-called “apprentice” police constable. They still have to go through a three-month on-campus training course before being assigned as a probationary constable. Anyone who gets promoted will undergo further specialised training and education and it’s expected that managerial ranks will have the equivalent of a Masters degree and quite possibly actual academic qualifications in law, forensics, psychology, management etc. For example, the Commissioner of the London Metropolitan Police, Dame Cressida Dick graduated in 2001 as a Master of Philosophy in criminology from Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, with the highest grade in her year.

Half-assing it as the US does, electing upper-ranks police officers by popular vote beggars the imagination.

It would ban D&E procedures, which the GOP has been scare-mongering as “dismemberment abortion.”

It imposes a criminal penalty on any provider who uses a D&E. It is even banned for a dead foetus.

Allegedly it has a procedure where a physician or nurse can appeal to the state Board of Health, but that is run by Republicans.

The effect is to cause providers to shy away from a commonly-used procedure which is ofttiimes the safest method.

538 is projecting that, despite the pandemic and mass unemployment, Trump will get the exact same vote % as in 2016, 46%. The difference is few anti-Trump votes are going to 3rd party candidates, and Biden is projecting to 52%. Hence GOP efforts to get Kanye West on the ballot.

So far, that effort seems to failing rather miserably. Maybe the USA’s saving grace will end up being the Trump administration’s utter incompetence.

This would be pre-DeJoy’s changes, but:

Donald Trump’s sabotage of the U.S. Postal Service could already have changed the outcome of one election. The clerk in Sterling Heights, Michigan, said that 165 ballots arrived too late to be counted in the August 4 primary election—even though they were postmarked five days before the primary. One primary in Macomb County was decided by just 87 votes.

The ballots arrived Monday August 10 with July 30 postmarks. This comes after some Michigan voters reported not receiving their absentee ballots in time despite having requested them well ahead of the primary. At the same time, people around the country are experiencing mail delays.

So Atlas is head of neuroradiology? That makes him an expert on infectious diseases? This is so ridiculous — but this is not unexpected from members of the medical community, especially those associated with RW think tanks like the Hoover Inst. Too many are arrogant jerks who think that their degree confers expertise in all areas of the medical field.

I have to confess that I am especially biased against radiologists. 20 years ago, when my late husband was on chemotherapy fighting metastasized cancer, a radiologist, who never bothered reading his prior scans, read his latest scans and pronounced him clear of cancer. I looked at the same scan and could see the tumor, which had shrunk significantly but was still there. The oncologist agreed with my assessment. In the case of Atlas, it should be considered medical malpractice to pontificate on areas in which you have no expertise.

If one party holds the trifecta, most all of the policy is going to be set by the president. We are long past the days of FDR vetoing hundreds (if not thousands) of bills by a Democratic caucus. Congress isn’t going to be fighting with the president in those circumstances (which would probably be a waste of Warren’s talents). I’m operating on the idea that the filibuster is probably going away, for better or for worse.

The way it operates now is incredibly stupid and needs to change. Personally, I’d prefer a system where if you vote against cloture you have to get up and talk, once everyone who voted against cloture has had the opportunity to speak, the “debate” is ended and it should proceed to a vote. But at this point, I’m probably also fine with just saying 50+1 to get cloture.

re: #294 Hecuba’s daughter

They may not all be on social media but too many of those are definitely watching Faux News and listening to talk radio; they are getting the message that there is rioting and violence in the streets.

And before we get into how ‘social media isn’t real life’, remember that we have an election where the GOP may end up having a genuine QAnon caucus because of how many Q-berts will actually get elected to the US House. And as pointed out, how Faux News basically dictates the direction of the rest of the news? Social media is getting up there in how much it actually influences coverage everywhere else, whether we like it or not. It doesn’t have to actually reflect the real world. It just has to create the narrative for ‘real media’ to latch on to and disseminate to the less internet savvy for it to become ‘truth’.

EDIT: Also, is there just something weird going on with the quoting system? If I try to add in multiple quotes, each subsequent quote will paste itself smack dab in the HTML address for the first quoted post, and that’s no matter where I leave the cursor in the text window before I hit the ‘quote’ button.

Social media is getting up there in how much it actually influences coverage everywhere else, whether we like it or not. It doesn’t have to actually reflect the real world. It just has to create the narrative for ‘real media’ to latch on to and disseminate to the less internet savvy for it to become ‘truth’.

It is a lot cheaper & easier to get an intern to mine the Internet for what is trending than to pay journalists to investigate.

The GOP has their base convinced that Biden/Harris = Lenin/Trotsky.

Lenin? Trotsky? We need updated references — maybe the favorites from 2008: Alinksy (who died in 1972) and the still-living Bill Ayers, who co-founded the Weather Underground but is now a retired professor of Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Of course Biden/Harris don’t have the Chicago ties of Obama, but that never stopped the GOP before.

Booker is African American. He’s a current US Senator from NJ. He’s a former mayor of NJ. He’s a Rhodes Scholar. Smart guy.

So of course Trump not only misspells his name, but thinks he’s a bogeyman for cancelling suburbs - which NJ has none? I live in the fucking suburbs. NJ is the suburbs for NYC and Philly, plus urban areas like Paterson, Trenton, Newark, Edison, Linden, etc.

No one is ending suburbs. Trump’s a fucking lunatic spewing racist claptrap.

And also, that “the majority of Americans are not on social media” once again is incorrect…

in 2019, 79 percent of the population in the United States had a social networking profile, representing a two percent increase from the 77 percent usage reach in the previous year. This equals approximately 247 million U.S. social media users as of 2019.

Well, yes: I DID know that current strains of weed are much more potent than in previous eras.

I recall reading, a few years back, a piece on that little-known government operation: the Federal marijuana farm in Mississippi, where they have been growing the same strain of happy-hemp since the 60’s, to use as a research standard. The article noted that, since it was established, the strain they grow there is now virtually a “living fossil” with a THC content, if consistent, about (IIRC) at least half that of almost every other commercially-available type. And probably less.

Fact. Biden is the first person to have an African American running mate and to be one to an African American. For a while man who could have been a classmate of Emmett Till, I think Biden is more forward thinking on race and representation than many including on the left will give him credit for. I mean, I’m not sure it’s exactly the existence of clickbait. It’s the fact that the social media platforms have committed the exact same sins of ‘real media’: Privileging conservative speech by treating it as good and honest on its face even when it continues to prove the exact opposite, especially outlets that have peddled in absolutely nothing but bad faith. What was supposed to help disseminate the truth that ‘real news’ filtered out for ‘objectivity’s sake, now often reinforces it instead, and now has become print and TV media’s prime go-to outlet for peddling, at best, the both-sides nonsense, and at worse laundering the worst of conservative thought as genuine controversy and serious discussion (the fact that Q Anon has persisted to potentially gain a serious foothold in Congress this election is proof of that).

All while making sure that liberals, Dems, etc. are held to the most stringent of double standards because of course.

Once people who understood botany and growing got involved, it was inevitable that new/better strains were going to be bred. Happens with pretty much every plant that becomes agriculturalized.

I give it about another 5-10 years until someone introduced “heritage” or “heirloom” marijuana the way we have heritage and heirloom veggies and eggs.

Social media is like any other media We’re scared of it, with good reason. That’s happened with every other media in history. Eventually, we reach an understanding and a peace with a given artform as we realize how to express ourselves and interact with it.

That’s hard right now because our social media barons are just like the newspaper barons in 1900—in other worlds, total assholes. But understanding will come. Social networks are too much part of our lives now.

P.S. Facebook did something I never expected. I saw a totally American feel-good post involving a dog, or something sentimental, where everyone in the comments was saying how sweet and good it is.

In small print, Facebook informed me, “Posted from Kosovo”.

There is a famous group of Kosovars who post very uber total awesome American photos and inspirational articles. You’ve seen them on Pinterest, posting those stupid “MY MOM SLAPPED ME INTO NEXT YEAR BUT I TURNED OUT OK!” image memes. They outright scam people by collecting money for giveaways that never seem to actually happen. They even made a fake Police Lives Matter page with a stock-photo cop. There wasn’t a real American anywhere in that group.

I said as much in the original thread. No response. I usually get called out for Harshing Someone’s Mellow.

Good for Facebook for doing this. Kosovars can all eat shit.

It really could be a crap shoot. I was usually good, since two of my friends had older brothers who dealt and had connections to some of the better stuff around. Definitely had some ditch weed passed off as good a time or two.
